The Power of Words and Music
I’d like to share a story with you about the transformative power of words and music. Over twenty years ago I met a woman with a remarkable story. She had married young, but not well. In her unhappy marriage she dealt with addictions, poverty and hopelessness. When I met her, we were both working for a large corporation – she as an assistant to a VP and I was a subcontractor brought in to do some database programming. We hit it off and became friends. In time she shared with me how she got out of the bad situation and released her own addictive behavior.
With the help of God and the power of words and music, she transformed her life. When she was in the middle of this bad situation, she started collecting uplifting words, phrases and quotes. She pasted these pieces of paper around her house. They were everywhere – on the walls, on her bathroom mirror, in her closet, on her coffee maker. She also began listening to more uplifting music.
In time she reprogrammed her mind to think differently. As her thoughts changed, her life began to transform. She got out of the bad marriage, got a great job, and made a better life for herself and her children. She eventually went on to start a ministry to help people recover from sex addiction.
Combining Words and Music
This is just one example of the power of words and music to transform a life. Recently, I went through Martina Muir’s 2020 Guidebook which helps you set a rich tone for your life. The guidebook culminates in having you create affirmations for your new year based on the exercises in the book. Last night I took my 2020 affirmations and set them to music. (If you’re interested, you can listen to that here.)
I have been a collector of music my whole life, but especially in the past couple decades I have used words and music in conjunction with visualization to transform my life.
For example, I discovered the song, “Love Don’t Let Me Down” when my mother died, and I simultaneously went through an unexpected divorce. This morning, my husband came into my office while I was practicing the song and asked if he could sing it with me. After we sang it, I realized that perhaps I sang this sweet, crazy, fun and generous man into my life. And here he is singing the song with me.
The Power of Believing
When we’re willing to believe that we can create a better life for ourselves, we absolutely can do so. Belief is the key ingredient. What if you can’t muster the faith to believe? Reprogram your mind with positive words and music. This can create the necessary belief.
If you want a better life, may I suggest you do as my friend and I have done:
- Set an intention for how you want your life to look. Martina Muir’s 2020 Guidebook is a great place to start.
- Start collecting words, phrases and quotes that inspire you. Surround yourself with them. Here’s a company that makes inspirational words and phrases you can put on your wall that are a lot prettier than those bits of paper my friend used.
- Craft your own affirmations and either read or listen to them daily.
- Start collecting music that inspires and uplifts you and listen to it often. Create a soundtrack (aka playlist) for your goals and dreams. If you’d like your affirmations set to music and need some help, let’s talk.
- Most of all, turn to God. Get Him on board with your vision.
- Stay in tune with the Spirit and follow where it leads. (My new book, “Trust Your Heart: Spirit-Led Business” will guide you through knowing how to identify the voice of the Spirit and how to practically follow where it leads.)
Believe in miracles! I stand as a witness that God keeps His promises and He can turn around the most hopeless of situations and make it all work together for your good. (Even if you don’t sing or play all the lines perfectly).
