Want to know how to accomplish big things? Here’s a lesson from history on how…
Whether you’re LDS or not you probably have seen one of their 155 temples. “The Mormons” are known for their gorgeous temples. But do you know the story of the first one?
Back in the 1830s God told Joseph Smith to build a temple. Joseph shared this with the people. They owned a piece of land in Kirtland, OH they would use. Three months came and went with no work on the temple. And the Lord started to chastise Joseph for not acting on this project.
When I read this I thought. “That’s a huge undertaking for a small new denomination. They didn’t even know what it really was for or what it was supposed to look like. You’d think God would cut them some slack. Give them more information.”
Have you ever felt God tell you to do something that seemed huge? So you waited for more instruction but all you got in time was a feeling of “why haven’t you done anything with what I told you to do?”
When the Lord sort of fussed at Joseph and the people about this, Joseph’s brother Hyrum Smith went out to the property and started digging. He had no idea what the thing was supposed to look like, but he knew it needed a foundation. So he started digging that.
Once Hyrum started digging, God sent a revelation to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery of what the temple should look like. They saw a full holographic image over their heads. They saw the dimensions, the completed exterior and interior.
But the details weren’t revealed until Hyrum did the only thing he knew to do — dig.
What is the first baby step you know to take toward your big dream? Or big project? The secret to making big things happen is to stop concerning yourself with all the steps you don’t know yet, and focus on the one right in front of you.
It’s been my experience that once you take that step, the next will reveal itself. Do the next, and the next will follow. “Line upon line, precept upon precept.” This is how God instructs you to build big things.
