Is Your Past Holding Your Dreams Hostage?

Five years ago, John came up with an idea for an innovative business program. He developed the materials and began marketing it, but things were slow going. Then he suffered a financial setback which forced him to go back to his day job.

During his time away from entrepreneurship, other people started running with the idea. Several of them have become very successful and are well-known in the field.

Now, five years later, John is ready to spread his entrepreneurial wings. In chatting with John, he voiced that he feels like he will always be a failure unless he goes back to the initial idea and makes a success of it. He wants to prove to himself that he can make it work. He’s also irritated at another guy who ran with John’s idea and made a success of it.

John came to me for guidance. How should he proceed? What should he do first? Should he go back to his original materials and re-release them, adapt them or what?

After listening to John tell his story, it became evident that three important things were out of alignment for John. Most likely he would not succeed with his plan as a result. Can you guess why John will have a tough time?

The three things that must align when you pursue any ambitious goal are:

1) Your Intention
2) Your Motivation
3) Your Energetic Stance (A term coined by Carolyn Cooper meaning that all your attitudes, self-talk, and beliefs are in alignment with the idea.)

Let’s look at these three elements for John:

1) Intention – to become a success at marketing his 5-year-old business idea

2) Motivation – to prove he’s not a failure and to extract a bit of revenge on a colleague

3) Energetic Stance – John wasn’t feeling too confident with the whole idea. He lacked clarity and focus and wondered if his goal was the right one.

While John’s intention is clear, his motivation is questionable. Your motivation should be clean and pure. I would not call revenge and proving something to yourself and others a pure, clean motivation. His motivation as it stands is going to prove troublesome.

He would be better off releasing the guilt, remorse, sense of loss and feelings of failure from the past. Then, he’d be free to find a more appropriate motivation for his intention. This might be something like providing for his family, doing work that he loves, making a positive difference in the lives of his clients. You get the idea…

Because John’s motivations were not ideal, his energetic stance was wishy-washy. He was feeling like something was off, but he wan’t sure what it was. He also needed some work on his self-worth and his feelings about success and money.

I worked with John to help him release his negative feelings and need for revenge. He was able to incorporate forgiveness for himself and others and install positive feelings about money and success. After these things were taken care of, John was in a much better place to determine if this idea was really one that he even wanted to pursue.

Letting go of the past is so important when you’re trying to create a different future!  What about you … are you hanging onto old failures, false beliefs, or old expectations of yourself? Is there anyone you could forgive (perhaps even yourself) so you can be free to pursue the highest path for you?
