Dolly Parton once said, “Discover who you are and do it on purpose.” I couldn’t agree more!
The older I get the more I realize that life is much simpler, joyous and successful when I work with my strengths and innate abilities and don’t fret over weaknesses or try to be someone I’m not. There are lots of wonderful people I can lean on to augment my weaknesses; and it’s through collaboration that I find exquisite joy.
This makes life a journey of self-discovery. It’s exploring different things to decide what activities, hobbies and interests click. Along the way, I’m getting clearer on the distinctions between what I like and don’t like… so I can do more of what makes me happy!
For example, over the last couple months, I’ve learned these important distinctions about myself.
1. I’m happiest when I promote people, not “things.”
2. I love speaking at collaborative live events better than being the only person on stage the whole time.
I’d love to be a guest speaker at someone else’s event. The publicity services I offer could easily be a bonus or add-on to the event coordinator’s upsell. AND I can help promote the event. It’s a win-win all around! 🙂
Btw, if this is you, contact me and let’s collaborate!
3. I’m what Nancy Marmolejo and Lynda-Ross Vega would term a “Trusted Advisor” at SpotlightU. It’s all about integrity — building trust, relationships and connecting people. I’m your human rolodex. 🙂
I’ve spent much of my business life doing work that’s outside my core passion, but within my innate abilities. This has fostered valuable technical skills that have proven useful along the journey. But, I’m systematically delegating the things that bog me down so I can step more fully into the zone of who I’m created to be.
For example, I have the technical ability to pull off an Amazon bestseller launch for one of our projects, but going into the “bestseller book launch business” and launching other people’s books would be bogging down in the “how” of the “what.” I’m born to promote, not manage details. I’d be happy to consult you through the launch, just don’t make me do it! 🙂
4. Thanks to Kirk Duncan and his Present Yourself training, I now have more confidence on stage and a tried-and-true system for asking for the sale that works. It’s completely congruent with my personality and style! “Ask and ye shall receive” is a true principle on multiple levels!
What about you? What are you learning about yourself? How can you build your life around your passion and what you love to do and start delegating or dropping the things that bog you down? There’s someone out there who loves to do what you hate! Offer them the blessing of doing it! 🙂
